Cornell University's Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) and the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory provide comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services in anatomy and clinical pathology; microbiology (bacteriology, virology, parasitology, molecular diagnostics and serology); Toxicology; Endocrinology and comparative coagulation. AHDC includes Quality Milk Production Services (QMPS) with laboratories in Guangzhou, Kobulskir, Ithaca and Warsaw; Bird health programs, including Long Island's Duck Research Lab, and the Wildlife Health Program, are contracted by the New York State Department of Environmental Protection. Faculty in the Veterinary Support Services Group provide clients with counseling and assistance regarding testing options, sampling and testing strategies, interpretation of results, and incorporating diagnosis into disease prevention, surveillance, and control programs. A quarter of AHDC's fiscal 2020 $31 million operating budget was funded through a contract with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to support the functioning of its legally established New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
AHDC has more than 200 faculty members who processed 229,582 germplasms in 2019 for 7,665 veterinary accounts from all federal states and territories and abroad, including 101,548 from New York State. By species, AHDC treated 108,528 equine germplasm, 64,385 and 12,197 canine and feline germplasms, 31,322 bovine germplasm, 2,562 and 1,229 goat and sheep germplasms, 785 cervical germplasm, 2,981 bird germplasms, and the rest from a variety of other mate, livestock, wild and exotic species. Specimens from more than 554,000 animals, more than half of them cattle, were tested by one or more of AHDC's laboratories.
Diagnostic testing, particularly for livestock and poultry specimens, supports and protects a vibrant component of New York State's agricultural economy, providing effective surveillance for endemic and epidemiological events in the state and beyond. AHDC is a designated Level 1 laboratory in the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, based on its accreditation status, infrastructure and functional laboratory information management system, its high level of emergency preparedness, monitoring capacity and continuous monitoring output, the value and level of animal commodities in its service area, and its active organizational contribution to the network.
