The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands is dedicated to studying healthy populations living in sustainable, safe and healthy environments. RIVM pursues these objectives based on independent scientific research, working with commissioning clients to identify needed research and conduct research accordingly, advising governments, professionals and the public, and sharing knowledge.
RIVM advises the government on how to keep the living environment safe, clean and healthy, sharing knowledge on smart solutions for a safe and sustainable environment. RIVM collects, analyzes, and interprets infectious disease data by conducting field and laboratory studies. In this process, it is active in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, in cooperation with organizations in the Netherlands and abroad. RIVM investigates the need for good health care and healthy lifestyles and assesses which national and local health programmes are most effective. One of the important tasks of the study was perinatal screening: checking babies for possible diseases during pregnancy and after birth. There are also population screening programmes to prevent or detect early diseases such as colorectal, breast and cervical cancer.
