The International Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) is Tohoku University's newest research institute, established about a year after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
IRIDeS consists of about 100 researchers from different fields of expertise working in 7 departments to deepen disaster science and establish practical disaster prevention science, while organizing problems and countermeasures according to the disaster response cycle. So far, steady results have been achieved in understanding the damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, clarifying the mechanism of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, establishing earthquake archives, implementing assistance to disaster-stricken areas, and establishing disaster medicine.
IRIDeS fully supports the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, held in Sendai in March 2015, and continues to carry out various research and practical activities, emphasizing cooperation between industry, government and academia and the private sector at home and abroad, to promote the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Reduction 2015-2030, a global disaster reduction guideline adopted by the United Nations Conference. While continuing academic research in disaster science, researchers will strive to reduce disasters comprehensively in Japan and overseas while rebuilding disaster-stricken areas such as the Great East Japan Earthquake.
