The Institute of Multivariate Materials Science (hereinafter referred to as the Multivariate Institute) was established in April 2001 by integrating the first three laboratories (Materials Engineering Laboratory, Scientific Measurement Laboratory and Reaction Chemistry Laboratory) that integrate traditional different fields, with the purpose of establishing "Multivariate Materials Science and Its Applied Research".
Since 2010, the "Joint Research Center in the Field of Materials and Equipment" (a joint project with the Institute of Electronic Science of Hokkaido University, the Institute of Chemical and Life Sciences of Tokyo Institute of Technology, the Institute of Industrial Science of Osaka University, and the Institute of Advanced Materials Chemistry of Kyushu University) as a pioneering network-based joint utilization and joint research center, has also achieved many research results together with site users. Starting from FY2022, the network activity enters the third phase, and MyoroKen will carry out cooperative activities efficiently and advanced as the headquarters of the "cross-alliance business that creates the future with people, knowledge, and materials".
On the other hand, since FY2016, Drikuri Laboratory has been actively promoting its importance both domestically and overseas as a core department that promotes the planning of next-generation synchrotron radiation facilities, and has collaborated with universities, Miyagi Prefecture, and the Tohoku Economic Groups Federation as a key high-brightness soft X-ray light source for next-generation innovation. At the end of March 2019, the construction of Tohoku University's Aobayama New Campus began. In October of the same year, the International Synchrotron Radiation Innovation and Intelligence Research Center was established, an academic organization that uses synchrotron radiation, and several research groups were transferred from multidisciplinary laboratories to support its activities.
The Multidisciplinary Research Institute actively conducts interdisciplinary research, creates and develops new material science and technology research, changes stereotypes in the field of materials and materials, and disseminates results that contribute to society. In addition, the institute actively promotes industry-academia-government cooperation and conducts activities as a laboratory open to society. In addition, under agreements with more than 20 overseas research institutions, many international joint research is carried out to promote research, with the goal of becoming an international materials science and technology research center.
In recent years, it has been certified as a network-based national joint use and joint research center, and has leapt to become an organization open to the national community of researchers.
