In the more than 100-year history of Northeastern University, researchers have collected and accumulated a wide variety of material specimens, numbering more than 2.4 million. In order to widely publicize these "testimonies of Tohoku University's history" and promote research and social education, the Tohoku University Academic Resources Research Open Center was established in April 2006.
The center consists of three on-campus joint research and education facilities: the Tohoku University Comprehensive Academic Museum, the Tohoku University History Museum, and the Tohoku University Botanical Garden. The integration of these three organizations lays the foundation for the centralized management and dissemination of valuable specimens.
At Tohoku University, after years of investigation and research, new research results are born every day. Universities need to widely disseminate these research findings to society and gain understanding. Through these activities, they hope to become a base for spreading Tohoku University's knowledge to people around the world.
The Tohoku University Botanical Garden has the main garden of the Kawaguchi South Campus and the Hakkoda Mountain Branch of the Hakkoda Mountain System in Aomori Prefecture.
This natural botanical garden was established in 1958 (Showa 33) for research and education. With an area of 520,000 square meters, it is the largest university botanical garden in Japan. This place was taken over for hundreds of years by Oririn, commonly known as "Aoba-san") at Sendai Castle, with almost no manpower, and in 1600 (Keicho 5) the construction of the castle began by Date Masamun. Therefore, despite its proximity to the city, precious natural ecosystems including Mibayashi, which is a cedar tree, which is a natural vegetation in the hilly area of the Sendai area, remains, and it is designated as a nationally designated natural monument "Aoba Mountain". The park also has historical relics such as the water source of Honmaru, "Mishimizu" (private), Mongolian steles, and the ruins of the moat.
The Hakkodayama Branch was established in 1929 (Showa 4) as the Hakkodayama Botanical Laboratory for the biology classroom of Tohoku Imperial University. Located in the mid-belly of the Hakkoda Mountains in Aomori Prefecture, at an altitude of 900 meters, it is a natural botanical garden with an area of 7,500 square meters.
