Global species loss leads to environmental changes and puts the functioning of ecosystems and ecosystem services at risk. Research on the basics of biodiversity is needed to better understand the role of biodiversity and the measures needed to protect it. This requires the cooperation and coordination of various disciplines and scientific methods. iDiv researchers conduct basic research on which decision-makers in the application and policy sectors develop solutions to the current biodiversity crisis.
iDiv is DFG's research center with more than 400 employees and members, mainly in Halle, Jena and Leipzig, and researchers from more than 35 countries lay the scientific foundation for the sustainable management of the planet's biodiversity.
Biodiversity is not only species diversity, but also genetic diversity, functional diversity, interaction and ecosystem diversity. iDiv integrates the individual research initiatives of more than 150 active members from 11 institutions and defines five major areas of research that are highly relevant: ecological functioning, environmental change, social intervention, molecular research, ecological complexity, and biodiversity change. iDiv researchers work on a variety of experiments and observations as well as virtual platforms to produce cutting-edge integrated biodiversity science complemented by a range of scientific services and science policy activities.
