The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) was founded in 1882 as the Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce and Commerce, and for 140 years since then, it has been committed to research activities that contribute to the development of Japan and the improvement of people's lives.
As one of the largest public research institutions in Japan, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology focuses on the creation of technologies useful to Japanese industry and society and their practical applications, as well as "bridge" and "social implementation" functions to commercialize innovative technology seeds.
To this end, AIST's core technologies are bundled together and "5 Fields, 2 Integrated Centers" has been established, which demonstrates its comprehensive capabilities, and about 2,300 researchers from 11 research bases in Japan conduct R&D at the core and pioneering positions of the national innovation system in response to changes in the innovation environment and national strategies developed in response to these changes.
Climate change and natural disasters, declining birth rates and ageing populations in developed countries, the continued spread of infectious diseases, the international situation and increasing tensions in economic security. Today, not only Japan, but also the whole world is facing various complex social problems. AIST's mission is to create innovations through science and technology, guide them to solve these social issues, and contribute to improving Japan's industrial competitiveness. To achieve this mission, AIST has identified its vision for the future as the core of Japan's national innovation ecosystem. To achieve this, they are considering achieving this goal by 2030 and are moving forward with management reforms.
One of them is the establishment of the Social Executive Headquarters. To achieve this mission, they need to work with industry to ensure that innovative technologies are implemented in society in the form of products and services. They want to effectively link research results to social implementation through three functions: project concepts for which the Social Implementation Headquarters is responsible, implementation of demonstration projects and promotion of organizational initiative start-ups. They are also considering the formation of new companies to further strengthen this function.
