Established in 1941, the Asian Institute for Advanced Study was the first institute affiliated to the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Tokyo. The subjects covered all regions where Asian languages are spoken, from Arabic to Japanese, from Altai to Indonesia in the south. It covers an equally wide range of research disciplines, including politics, social studies, law, economics, religion, philosophy, anthropology, history, archaeology, literature and the arts. The diversity of fields allows individual scholars in the Institute to share the specialties and research that contribute to the goal. The Institute seeks to create a better global future through multidimensional studies of Asia's past and present, while respecting the traditions of each region's individual cultures.
By researching and creating formal partnerships, organizing and sharing archival materials, and disseminating research, the Asian Institute of Advanced Studies enables the generation and participation of the next professional scholars in cutting-edge projects. The Institute collaborates with overseas research networks, promotes field trips and field studies, participates in international conferences and continues to collaborate. Leading researchers from around the world visit the Institute for short - and long-term visits, using archival materials, collaborating with faculty and staff and completing specific research in an effort to train the next generation of young scholars.
The Institute also teaches professional courses at university colleges and graduate schools, dedicated to preparing students for their future responsibilities as global citizens. In addition, the Institute plays a central role in the development of university-level projects with the hope of achieving collaboration between Asian studies and library functions. Through the Global Asia Studies Program, the Institute studies how to universalize various issues, open Asia to the world, and put Asian researchers at the forefront of thinking.
The Asian Institute of Advanced Studies has always emphasized interdisciplinary research, combining literature analysis with field research. Since the 1950s, researchers have conducted various field studies. Almost all Institute members maintain daily academic links with international academic institutions and conduct field research throughout Asia. Through the establishment of academic exchange agreements, the Institute has strengthened academic ties with research institutions in Asia.
