The Centre for Communication and Social Change (CfCSC) specializes in the study and practical application of communication processes, technologies and media that are used to bring about equitable change, social transformation and empowerment for society. The Centre is the only professional academic institution in Australia that conducts research, offers degree programmes and is critically involved in this field.
Founded in 2007 and currently housed in the School of Communication and the Arts, the Centre is comprised of a group of international researchers and practitioners with global experience in development and communication affairs, including the United Nations, non-governmental organizations and government agencies. They conduct collaborative research, participate in CSC programs through consultation, build capacity by convening graduate research and course programs, and promote public participation in CSC concepts and methods.
Specific processes in which CfCSC excels include participatory program planning, evaluation and impact assessment, communication strategy development, facilitation, adult learning, participatory needs and opportunity assessment, and action research.
The center's main research areas are participatory communication, social movements and advocacy, communication technology and social change, interdisciplinarity and social change, etc.
In terms of participatory communication, including the use of communication processes, technology and media, to promote equitable stakeholder participation in social change processes. Stakeholders include individuals, groups and institutions involved in and affected by these change processes. Work in this area involves the purposeful design and application of communication strategies, platforms and mechanisms to actively and effectively facilitate the change process. It also involves a critical analysis of the institutional structures, conditions and capacities required for participatory communication processes in order to make the change process produce more equitable and sustainable results.
In the context of communication technologies and social transformation, it is widely recognized that telecentres and mobile phones, as well as various information and communication technologies (ICTs), have great potential to bring about positive social change. While there are many examples of ICT working around the world, its success depends on an enabling environment and the freedom of people to creatively adapt technology to local needs.
