The School of Modern Languages was established in 1934 by the University of Queensland Senate to invite the community into the university through language learning, giving more adults the opportunity to deepen their lives. The University of Queensland IML promotes language learning and cross-cultural communication, which is particularly useful in today's multicultural society. IML also provides opportunities for former UQ students, as well as alumni, to connect with the University in meaningful ways during years away from formal study. This task is assisted by certified and dedicated language tutors, taught in more than 30 languages.

Researchers use communicative methods to teach and learn. All four skill areas are covered. Learn to speak, listen, read, and write applications in real-life situations that encourage collaborative teamwork in the classroom. The cultural component is integrated with a language acquisition program that focuses on general background research related to the countries and peoples where the target language is spoken.
The Institute's professional translation services provide NAATI certified official translations covering English in more than 80 languages and vice versa.
IML courses in 30 languages are taught by qualified, enthusiastic language instructors who are native speakers or have native language proficiency. Studying at IML does not require a registered degree. IML's courses are open to the public with no prerequisites or placement tests and are among the most affordable courses in Brisbane. Most IML courses cost around $12 per hour. Most classes are currently conducted online via Zoom video conferencing software, and some are also taught at the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus, where extensive campus facilities, transport options and modern classrooms can be utilized. Courses vary depending on the type of course, with courses offering 2 to 6 hours of contact time per week.
