The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (IASH) was established in July 2015. It aims to promote high-level research in traditional humanities disciplines such as history, philosophy and literature, while also participating in the latest developments in the humanities, including cultural studies, communication and science communication. The Institute is comprised of many full-time research scholars, postdoctoral fellows, faculty fellows, and visiting scholars. IASH received strategic funding from senior executives and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Queensland. Most of its specific research projects are funded by external grants.
In addition to research and publication activities, IASH organizes international conferences, public lectures, thematic seminar series, and workshops on ongoing work in-house. Its members are actively involved in national and international research networks and have formal links with a number of Australian and overseas institutions. At the heart of the Institute's mission is the Faculty Fellows Program, which seconds staff from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences teaching school to the College for a semester to conduct their own research projects.
The Institute combines the research activities of two research centres in the former School of the Arts at the University of Queensland, the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies (CCCS), established in 2000 under the direction of Professor Graeme Turner and more recently Professor Gay Hawkins, and the Centre for the History of European Discourse (CHED), established in 2002 by Professor Peter Cryle and subsequently Peter Professor Harrison leads the University of Queensland node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions (Europe 1100-1800), whose principal investigator and director is Professor Peter Holbrook. Professor Harrison was the first Director of IASH.
The institute occupies a purpose-built research space in the Fogensmith Tower in the heart of the University of Queensland's St Lucia campus.
