CFSPH was designated as a World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Collaborating Centre in May 2016.
Since 2001, CFSPH has been developing educational materials for veterinary students and veterinarians. Activities include developing and delivering online courses on exotic and emerging animal diseases (EEDA) for veterinary students across the United States. CFSPH has also developed and provided APHIS-approved supplemental training for the National Veterinary Certification Program. CFSPH has partnered with the World Organisation for Animal Health to develop online training for government officials reporting disease outbreaks using the OIE reporting system. CFSPH provides accurate information on transboundary animal diseases and zoonotic diseases, online education for veterinary students and animal health professionals, infection control tools, and resources for local, state, and federal agencies to prepare for animal emergencies.
CFSPH was established in 2002 with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is located in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University and is fully funded by grants and partnership agreements from federal and state governments, as well as industry and nonprofit organizations. The Institute for International Cooperation on Animal Bioproducts (IICAB – World Organization for Animal Health Collaborating Centre) was established in 1995 as part of CFSPH.
The CFSPH website contains technical fact sheets, annotated images and PowerPoint presentations on important transboundary animal and zoonotic diseases for veterinary, medical and public health professionals. The site also contains disease resources designed for the general public. The CFSPH Animal Diseases website and its affiliated websites get millions of hits each year.
CFSPH offers online training for veterinary students, veterinarians, and animal health emergency responders. Two online courses on immunology and the principles of vaccination are also available. CFSPH developed continuing education materials for the USDA's National Veterinary Certification Program.
When implemented properly, infection control measures are a cost-effective means of reducing the incidence of disease. CFSPH provides veterinarians with resources to use in clinics, shelters or farms, resources that beef and dairy producers can implement, and a set of popular disinfectant guidelines.
CFSPH works with state, national, and international animal health agencies to develop resources and training materials to prepare, respond to, and recover from animal health emergencies at the local, state, national, and international levels.
