The Israel Center for Agricultural Research (ARO) was born in the town of Beit Shemen in 1921 and since its establishment 95 years ago, the institution has become Israel's center of agricultural science and innovation. It is an official research institute of the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture and an agricultural research center of Hebrew University, Tel Aviv University, Baran University, and Haifa University. The institution has become synonymous with the breeding program that has made Israel a global leader in agricultural innovation.
Home to 200 scientists, accounting for more than 75% of the country's agricultural research and innovation, it is the driving force behind Israel's renowned agricultural expertise, officially under the Israeli Ministry of Agriculture.
ARO's research focuses on 5 areas with the goal of improving ecological and agricultural concepts. Israeli scientists cultivate marketable products that help mitigate global famine, drought and plant pests and diseases. Through the center's main Beit Bagan campus and two secondary research centers in Ne've Yaár in the north and Gilat in the south, the Israel Agricultural Research Center studies plant conservation and science, animal science, post-harvest and food science, and agricultural engineering.
Working closely with farmers, extension workers and regional R&D centers in Israel, scientists develop, pilot and launch innovations, focusing on applied research to solve the specific challenges farmers face and providing them with solutions that enable them to enter new markets.
