Since 2003, the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University has worked side-by-side with Kamuli District residents to identify and implement sustainable solutions to meet the community's most pressing needs. Starting with farmer training, the center has evolved into programming that involves every stage of the life cycle.
From infants to schoolchildren, young to old, the Centre for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods addresses the challenge of ending hunger with a people-centred approach. The Centre's efforts have evolved to cover every stage of the life cycle. It requires many parts and parts to work together to make the important work of the center possible.
The Centre fosters responsible global citizens and prosperous local communities that benefit from food and financial security, quality education and healthcare, civic engagement, social inclusion, environmental stewardship, and overall sustainable livelihoods.
Harnessing the power of education to develop sustainable communities and responsible global citizenship has always been CSRL's mission. The center accomplishes its mission by focusing on education and capacity building as the core of sustainable human development, which is at the heart of all CSRL programs. CSRL has developed a lifecycle plan delivery model that serves all age groups. The model is represented in the lifecycle graph "Ending Hunger".
The success of CSRL depends on being people-centred, using research-based information while respecting indigenous knowledge, and adopting a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to inform and support the Centre's programs. Develop future leaders by providing today's students with the opportunity to learn how to be change agents, maintain the highest ethical standards in all relationships, and work tirelessly until the job is successfully completed.
