The Brennan Center for Justice is an independent, nonpartisan legal and policy organization dedicated to reforming, revitalizing, and, where necessary, defending democracy and the judicial system.
The Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law was founded in 1995 by a former law clerk to Justice William J. Brennan Jr. (1906-97) as a living memorial to his ideals: A commitment to a fair and inclusive democracy that supports the vulnerable and respects individual rights and freedoms. Importantly, Brennan put the value of "human dignity" at the heart of the law.
Since its inception in 1995, the Brennan Center for Justice has benefited from close relationships with faculty and students at NYU Law School.
NYU Law students often serve as legal interns and work with Brennan Center staff through the law school's Brennan Center Public Policy Advocacy Clinic, a semestle-long field trip course taught by Brennan Center attorneys. NYU Law School faculty make up one-third of the Brennan Center's board of trustees, and many professors work with the center in various capacities. The Brennan Center also hosts numerous seminars, panel discussions, and book talks at the Law School each year.
The Brennan Center for Justice is engaged in a fight for the future of constitutional democracy in the United States. They are committed to the rule of law and to developing and advancing a transformative reform agenda -- solutions designed to make American democracy work for all.
The Brennan Center has developed a unique model for advancing legal and policy change: conducting rigorous research to identify problems and develop transformative solutions. Work with elected officials to advance legislation. Shape opinions by communicating information directly to the media and the public. At a time of dramatic demographic change and economic dislocation, public institutions are in desperate need of reform and repair.
Under the influence of the Brennan Center for Justice, 19 states and the District of Columbia have enacted automatic voter registration. They supported small-donor public financing, which would give ordinary Americans a louder voice in political campaigns and enact ballot initiatives that ended partisan gerrymandering across the country.
