The University of Melbourne's Centre for Media and Communications (CMCL) is assisted by an advisory board representing a wide range of expertise in the media and communications industry and legal practice, supported by the Melbourne Law School and external and research partners. The Centre hosts a number of events and seminars open to the public each year.

The Centre undertakes large-scale research projects, conducts public seminars on legal and regulatory developments, supports research visits by Australian and international scholars, lawyers and policymakers, and oversees undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in media and communications law. CMCL is committed to ongoing innovation and important research projects related to media and communications law, both nationally and internationally, to explore the relationship between law and media and communication, to develop a deeper understanding and assessment of the practices of media professionals, to assist lawyers and judges in formulating and amending relevant laws, to promote periodic review of legislation, to assist publications and journalists in dealing with risks of legal liability, and to conduct critical academic and legal debate on the media.
