In 1994, the University of Melbourne Law School established the Centre for Employment and Industrial Relations Law (CELRL). Its broad objectives are to consolidate the teaching and research of labour and employment law at the University of Melbourne, to contribute to the development of labour and employment law teaching and research throughout Australia, and to engage with labour and employment law scholars around the world. Members of the Centre are responsible for teaching labour and employment law subjects and specializing in labour and employment law in the undergraduate and graduate courses of the Faculty of Law.
The members of the Centre conduct research on different aspects of a wide range of areas, such as employment and labor law and labour market regulation. Areas of focus include: management of individual working relations, discrimination and inequality in employment and the labour market, management of occupational health and safety, collective labour relations and negotiation, functions of trade unions and alternative forms of workers' representation, corporate governance and labour, implementation of minimum employment standards, international labour rights and standards, and unemployment law and labour market policy. Members of the Center have a keen interest in comparative labor and employment law and labor market regulation, conducting research on labor and employment regulation in the Asia-Pacific region, Southern Africa, North America and Europe.
The objective of the CELRL is to conduct and encourage independent research, both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, in Australia and internationally on all aspects of past, present and future work regulation; Develop and promote research-led teaching of labour and employment law, including the development and dissemination of innovative teaching methods and teaching materials; disseminate research findings on employment and industrial relations law; Establish and promote links with similar institutions internationally and nationally and promote participation between stakeholders within and outside the University.
