在U.S.
The Crown Institute for Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) is an independent division within the School of Arts and Sciences at New York University (NYU). As an institution for research and higher education in fields such as mathematics and computer science, it is regarded as one of the most famous and prestigious institutes of applied mathematics in the world. It takes its name from its founder, the famous mathematician Richard Crown.
In the U.S. News ranking of college majors, Crown has been ranked No. 1 in Applied mathematics for many years. In addition, it is also known for its extensive research in pure mathematical fields such as partial differential equations, probability theory, geometry, and other applied mathematical fields such as computational biology, computational neuroscience, and financial mathematics. Crown has 18 members of the National Academy of Sciences (more than any other mathematics department in the United States) and five members of the National Academy of Engineering.
The Institute is directly under the jurisdiction of the provost and president of New York University. It is a parallel institution with other departments and has strong independence. The Institute's internal undergraduate and graduate programs are run independently of NYU and are theoretically separate from the NYU College of Arts and Sciences and the NYU Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
The Applied Mathematics Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research laboratory whose interests span applied mathematics, physics, and biology, and uses tools for experimental observation and measurement, as well as mathematical modeling, simulation, and analysis. The lab occupies a first-floor suite in Warren Weaver House at 251 Mercer Street, a block from Broadway. The laboratory opened in the spring of 1998 after a space makeover with a grant from the Edward A. Sears Estate and the Mobil Foundation. The laboratory joins a small but sophisticated group of laboratory facilities within the Mathematics Department.
Four professors have been awarded the National Medal of Science, one of them the Kyoto Prize, and nine have received career awards from the National Science Foundation. Renowned mathematicians Peter Lax,S. R. Srinivasa Varadhan,Mikhail Gromov, and Louis Nirenberg won the Abel Prize in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2015, respectively. In addition, Louis Nirenberg received the highest lifetime achievement award, the Chen Sheng-shen Award, at the 2010 International Congress of Mathematicians.
