Since 2009, Seoul National University, in cooperation with the Korean government, Gangwon Province and Pyeongchang-gun, has established a large-scale green biotechnology research complex, the Grimm Institute of Bioscience and Technology, with the aim of contributing to industry-academia cooperation, international cooperation, and revitalization of the local economy by expanding green biology research and education capabilities. GBST strives to become a representative green biotechnology platform in Northeast Asia based on Seoul National University's research capabilities in the field of green biological sciences.
GBST will be a hub for green bioscience and technology, promoting industry-academia and regional collaboration, on-site education and the establishment of commercialization clusters through R&D combined with practical use and source technologies. The Institute tries to cover all aspects of biological sciences, including environmental protection animal husbandry, food industrialization, crop biotechnology, animal design and transplantation, and green ecological engineering, etc., and develops, supports and trains professional technologies using advanced analytical instruments in the agricultural industry, and implements future agriculture by addressing climate change, developing eco-friendly agricultural technologies, and developing energy-saving agricultural technologies. In addition, the institute has established a government cluster of industry-university-research institutes, and has established an industry-college-industry-academia cooperation complex and field-applied basic technologies for industry-academia operation. The Institute has established five on-site laboratories for eco-friendly life science, food industrialization, crop biotechnology, animal transplantation and green ecological engineering to increase and commercialize the growth potential of green organisms and related fields.
