Founded in 1949, the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) is one of the 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world's largest biomedical research institution.
The NIMH is the primary federal agency for the study of mental disorders, providing basic information on mental disorders, a range of related topics, and the latest mental health research. Transform the understanding and treatment of mental illness through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery and cure.
The purpose of NIMH is not to provide specific medical advice, but to provide users with information to better understand their health status and diagnosed disease.
NIMH funds research by scientists across the country as well as NIMH research in internal research programs. Through its off-campus programs, NIMH supports more than 2,000 research grants and contracts at universities and other institutions across the country and overseas. Investigators propose their own projects through grant applications and must apply for renewals at regular intervals in order to receive ongoing funding.
Approximately 500 scientists work in NIMH's on-campus research programs. On-campus scientists range from molecular biologists working in labs to clinical researchers working with patients at NIH Clinical Centers. While guided by a rigorous peer-review system, on-campus scientists have unique flexibility in fast-tracking research leads and unexpected opportunities. In addition, since it involves basic science and clinical trials, the program aims to promote interdisciplinary research.
