生物物理学、生物医学技术和计算生物科学系;
遗传学和分子生物学、细胞生物学和发育生物学系;
药理生理学和生物化学系;
研究能力建设司;
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) is one of 27 institutions or centers of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). With a budget of $3 billion, NIGMS supports more than 5,500 researchers and 5,000 research grants. The institute has a proven track record of funding scientists who go on to win Nobel Prizes, including 50 prizes in chemistry and 44 prizes in physiology or medicine.
NIGMS funded scientists have studied how living systems work at a range of levels, from molecules and cells to tissues, organisms and populations as a whole. The institute also supports research in certain clinical areas, primarily those that affect multiple organ systems. To ensure the vitality and continued productivity of research enterprises, NIGMS has played a leading role in training the next generation of scientists, enhancing the diversity of the scientific workforce, and developing research capacity across the country.
All NIH institutes and centers support basic research related to disease, organ system, life stage or population within their mission area. In contrast, NIGMS supports basic research that does not focus on these specific areas. Its research missions are aimed at understanding the principles, mechanisms and processes behind living organisms, often using research models. NIGMS also supports the development of basic methods and new technologies to achieve its mission. Supported research can utilize specific cellular or organ systems if they serve as models for understanding general principles. In most cases, the study of the overall goal of obtaining knowledge about the pathophysiology, treatment or cure of a particular organ or organ system or specific disease or condition would be more suitable for another institute or center.
The Institute is divided into the following sectors that support research, research training and capacity building in a range of scientific fields:
Department of Biophysics, Biomedical Technology and Computational Biosciences;
Department of Genetics and Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Developmental Biology;
Department of Pharmacophysiology and Biochemistry;
Research Capacity-Building Division;
Training, Workforce Development and Diversity Division.
