Founded in 1974 and directed by Nora Volko, MD since 2003, the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) is a federal scientific institute and the world's largest funder of biomedical research on drug use and addiction. It is one of 27 institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health and is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
NIDA supports and conducts extensive preclinical, clinical, and population-level research to address critical issues related to drug use and health. NIDA then disseminates key findings from the research it supports to the public, health professionals, researchers, policymakers, and other stakeholders. In order to advance scientific research on drug use and addiction and to apply this knowledge to improve personal and public health.
To better conduct research, the NIDA constituent divisions are as follows:
Three offices: Office of the Director of the National AIDS Programme, Office of Management, Office of Science Policy and Communication;
Six departments/centers: Intramural Research Program, Clinical Trials Network Center, Division of Epidemiology, Services and Preventive Research, Department of Extramural Research, Neuroscience, Faculty of Behavior, Department of Therapeutic and Medical Outcomes;
Seven cross-disciplinary research teams, working groups, interest groups, and consortiums: Analytical Interdisciplinary Team, Brain Development Research Consortium, Cannabis Science Interest (CSI) Group, Interdisciplinary Research Team in Genetics and Epigenetics, Nicotine and Tobacco Research Group, National Radar-NIA Academy of Sciences Neuroscience Working Group, Women/Sex/Gender Differences Research Group;
An advisory board: the National Advisory Committee on Drug Abuse.
