The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) was established in 1950 as one of the institutes and centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
NIDDK's mission is to conduct and support medical research and research training and to disseminate scientific information about diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; Study digestive diseases, nutritional disorders and obesity, as well as kidney, urinary and hematologic diseases to improve people's health and quality of life.
NIDDK conducts and supports innovative and critical basic, clinical and translational research, while promoting research training and mentoring opportunities to create new knowledge and improve health.
NIDDK consists of the following offices and research departments:
Office of the Director: providing scientific and administrative leadership to the Institute;
Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Metabolic Diseases: providing research funding and support for basic and clinical research and research training;
Faculty of Digestive Disorders and Nutrition: provides research funding and support for basic and clinical research and research training;
Renal, Urinary and Hematological Disorders Section: providing research funding and support for basic and clinical research and research training;
Executive Office: Leads the administration of the Institute, including the Office of Budget, Policy, Ethics and Technology;
On-campus research department: conducts basic, clinical and translational research; Provide research training opportunities from high school to postdoctoral degree;
Division of External Activities: management of appropriations and contract reviews and administrative appropriations management; Support the National Advisory Committee on Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases;
Office of Obesity Research: coordinates obesity-related research within NIDDK and NIH;
Office of Technology Progress: promotes research collaboration and exchange of research materials between NIDDK and the global scientific community;
Office of Coordination for Minority Health Research: collaborates on health disparity research and supports the recruitment and training of various biomedical researchers;
Office of Scientific Planning and Policy Analysis: support the development of scientific reports and briefing materials,patient and professional organizations and congressional investigative responses;
Communications and Public Liaison Office: Supports public affairs activities, media consultations, health information and education programs, and public advisory responses.
