The mission of the Environmental Health Sciences Centers (CEHS) is to study the biological effects of environmental factors, both individually and collectively, with a special emphasis on their impact on human health and ecosystem health. These studies have helped to understand and predict how exposure to environmental agents affects human health and the dynamics of human relationships with other organisms. CEHS research ranges from the physics and chemistry of the environment to basic research in epidemiology, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the environment on people's health. At the most basic level, CEHS studies chemicals in the environment, how they move through the environment, and the physical and chemical parameters of pollutants that enter the water humans drink and the air they breathe. Building on this, CEHS work spans the atomic level, the molecular level, the pathway level, the network level, the cellular level, the organism level, and the final population level to build a systems-level understanding of how exposure affects health. Through an understanding of the chemical and biological factors that affect health, the findings of the CEHS researchers open the door to new policies to regulate exposure and new ways to prevent and treat diseases caused by exposure.
