MIT Sloan School of Management was founded in 1952 as a donation by Alfred P. Sloan, president of General Motors, who was a member of MIT in 1895. In 1964, it was renamed "Sloan School of Management". The school was founded primarily to train people in engineering management and has grown in size over the decades since.
In 1931, the MIT Sloan School of Business created the nation's first full-time training program for corporate executives. Since then, the training of on-the-job managers has also become an important part of the business school. The school now enrolls about 350 Mbas a year, similar in size to Stanford's.
The main professional areas of the school include electronic commerce, financial management, information technology management, new technology and product development, strategic management and consulting, and manufacturing management. The School's mission is to develop principled and innovative leaders to improve the world and generate ideas that advance management practices.
