The Oxford Centre for Social and Legal Studies was established in 1972 to study and oversee the work of early career scholars. As the field of socio-legal research has expanded, the Centre now includes a wide range of disciplinary intersections, theories and methods. With special expertise in theoretical and empirical research, law and legal phenomena, methodology, regional legal society, and other disciplines related to law, research guides engagement with policy makers, practitioners, and the public.
Research by the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies considers some of today's most important global issues, including the impact of technology on the legal life experience, the global environmental crisis, judicial proceedings and immigration. Whether working alone or in groups, the research work is divided into five main clusters: access to civil and administrative justice, law outside the state, regulation and governance, law in the digital world, programmes for comparative media law and policy, and human rights experiences.
The centre's staff specialises in theoretically informed research on law in action, contributing to a broad programme of academic activities using expertise in interviews, participant observation, focus groups, surveys, discourse analysis and statistical analysis of data. Research Centre students constitute the largest collection of social law students in an academic unit in the UK, bringing exciting and fresh ideas to the research cluster.
