The Centre for Arts and Cultural Theory (ZKK) at the University of Zurich sees itself as an association of scientific researchers in film, literature and art, hoping to explore the cultural theoretical potential of aesthetic processes. ZKK researchers are interested in different perspectives on the arts, strengthening their focus on art and its inherent theoretical potential by focusing on the culturally theoretical character of artistic practice.
The Center stands out by halting efforts in recent decades to test linguistic or media aesthetic discoveries on non-artistic objects or processes, as an archive of the history of knowledge, ideas, or technology to understand and deal with art itself. Adopt Zurich's tradition of focusing on themes, materials and processes in terms of new theories and emphasizing their relevance to current cultural-scientific debates.
The center's four core areas are implicit and explicit aesthetics, art and theory, cross-cultural studies, and cross-historical avant-garde. Examine whether and how it is possible and how to hypothesize questions about the implicit and explicit aesthetics that have developed in art, including knowledge and experience in artificial intelligence, poetry, linguistics, and performance, exploring the cultural analytical functions of art and the process knowledge and experimental inspiration of production aesthetics and material iconography. The process of communication between art and theory focuses on the process of exchange between aesthetic objects and scientific theories, reflecting on science and art. Cross-cultural studies analyze how art and theory interact in different cultures, and the cross-cultural phenomena that arise in the process. The existing potential for cross-historical avant-garde research is in risk, speculation, innovation and the status quo.
