Founded in 1931, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL or LBL) continues to expand the scope of human cognition and seek scientific solutions to the daunting challenges facing humanity, from vast and mysterious universes to tiny particles. LBL is affiliated with the U.S. Department of Energy, managed by the University of California, and conducts rigorous scientific research in science and engineering, covering physics, nuclear energy, chemistry, materials science, computer science, environmental science, etc., and develops technologies that create many jobs and incomes.
The laboratory was formerly known as the University of California Radiation Laboratory, founded by UC Berkeley physicist Ernest Orlando Lawrence, who won the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing the cyclotron, a circular particle accelerator that opened the door to high-energy physics. Renamed Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in his honor. Lawrence believes that scientific research is best done by working together in teams of individuals with different areas of expertise. LBL has always followed his philosophy of inspiring innovation with an inclusive and open attitude.
With the goal of solving the most pressing and profound scientific problems facing humanity, LBL conducts basic research for a secure energy future, understands living systems to improve the environment, health and energy supply, explores matter and energy in the universe, builds and safely operates leading scientific facilities for the nation, and trains the next generation of scientists and engineers.
