Argonne National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary scientific and engineering research center in the United States, established in 1946, formerly known as the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago, born in the Manhattan Project in the 1940s, with atomic energy as the object of research, the goal is to use atoms to serve society and the world. In collaboration with universities, industry, and laboratories in other countries, scientists and engineers work together to develop innovative ways to harness energy, take on the task of using clean energy, create new materials, and better understand the environment in which humans live, including climate and the universe, and thus protect the environment.
Located in the Chicago area and surrounded by many of the world's top research institutions, Argonne Labs actively leads discovery and powers innovation in a wide range of core scientific capabilities, from high-energy physics and materials science to biology and advanced computer science. Research drives the development of basic, applied, and engineering, constantly solving complex challenges and developing new technologies that change markets and even the world.
The research agenda covers 16 research departments, 12 centres and six national user facilities. The sound scientific environment provides researchers and visitors from all over the world with a range of cutting-edge facilities and scientific tools to support further research, drive technological breakthroughs, and improve the competitiveness and quality of life of our country.
Scientific research at Argonne National Laboratory has developed many new technologies that help the further development of productive life and improve the way energy is produced, distributed and used. Serving the United States as a science and energy laboratory, the laboratory is known for its breadth of R&D capabilities and a robust suite of cutting-edge experimental and computational facilities, known worldwide in physics, materials and chemistry, mathematics and computer science, life sciences, nuclear energy, and more. Argonne National Laboratory is committed to seeking scientific and engineering solutions that address the major challenges of our time in an interdisciplinary and innovative way that promotes sustainable energy and healthy environmental development.
