Institute of Basic Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and School of Basic Medicine, Peking Union Medical College (HEREINAFTER referred to as the Institute) were founded in 1978, formerly known as Institute of Experimental Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences established in 1958 and Department of Basic Medicine, Peking Union Medical College established in 1921. At present, the institute has 374 staff members, including 3 academicians of The Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 11 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and 126 professional and technical personnel with senior titles. Based on discipline construction, the Institute attaches great importance to scientific research and talent training. It has 15 departments, a state key laboratory of Medical Molecular biology and a national demonstration center for basic medical experimental teaching. It undertakes two major tasks: scientific research and teaching.
In terms of scientific research, emphasis is placed on basic research on functional genomics of disease-related genes, gene expression regulation, proteomics, molecular immunity and medical genetics, as well as translational medicine combined with clinical research. From molecular, cell, tissue and organ levels to the whole level, from the basic to the clinical, with the systematic integration of biological thinking mode and possible methods, to explore the occurrence and development of diseases, for the development of early warning and intervention strategies and prevention and control programs for major diseases in China to provide scientific basis.
Current bear the national key basic research development plan (973), major scientific research projects, the national high technology research and development program (863), technology support and the national natural science fund, focus, innovation research group, the outstanding youth fund/administration for foreign expert affairs, the Ministry of Education innovation conference, plans, etc. More than 100 state-level scientific research projects. Since the 11th Five-Year Plan period, 450 million yuan has been invested in scientific research, and more than 1,800 research papers have been published. Since the "11th Five-Year Plan", it has won one second prize of national technological invention, one second prize and two third prizes of Chinese medical science and technology, two first prizes and one second prize of science and technology in colleges and universities, and one second prize and one third prize of Science and technology in Beijing.
In terms of teaching, Peking Union Medical College (Peking Union Medical College) undertakes the teaching tasks for eight-year medical undergraduates, master and doctoral students. It is one of the first units approved by the State to grant doctoral and master degrees. Currently, there are 55 doctoral supervisors, 32 master supervisors, more than 400 postgraduate students, and the postdoctoral station of basic medicine has been established. Biology (biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, biophysics, physiology) and pharmacy (pharmacology) are national first-level key disciplines. Immunology and pathophysiology are two national key disciplines. Basic medicine and translational medicine are key disciplines in Beijing. In 2012, Peking Union Medical College (Peking Union Medical College) obtained the financial support of the Ministry of Finance for "Small-scale characteristic Education", which marked an important step in the materialization of teaching and made great progress in education and teaching reform.
