The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a foundation governed by Article 14 et seq. of the Italian Civil Code, funded by the State, to carry out scientific research in the public interest for the purpose of technological development. Founded in 2003 and operating in 2005, it is the Italian Advanced Applied Science and Technology Research Center. Its main objective is to promote scientific development in Italy and throughout the world through research oriented to applications and technologies. IIT is widely regarded as one of the best research institutes in Italy and one of the best scientific research centers in Europe. The IIT tax is overseen by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, and the construction of the IIT Laboratory began in 2006 and ended in 2009.
The goal of the Institute is to promote excellence in basic and applied research and to promote the development of the national economy. The principal investigator and facility coordinator are senior scientists at the research line or facility leader. They are responsible for the implementation of scientific programs, part of the budget, and coordinating their employees. IIT currently has nearly 80 PI and 13 facilities coordinators.
It studies all 15 research centers, focusing on computational science, technology, nanomaterials and robotics. Focus on large-scale simulations of physical systems, repeating countless times to generate powerful statistics and data mining of large data sets to identify unexpected patterns; Dedicated to developing advanced genetic, molecular, electrophysiological, computational, imaging, and perturbation tools for dissecting microscopic neural processes behind brain function; R&D of new sustainable/biodegradable materials, nanocomposites, 2D materials, nanofabrication technologies and nanodevices, as well as new colloid chemistry methods; Advance state-of-the-art technology by developing new robotic platforms in hardware and software.
