清华大学城乡规划教育始于 1947 年梁思成先生开设的“都市计划”课程。1951年春季由吴良镛先生主持的市镇设计教学组成立，1952 年城市规划教研组正式成立，本科设立城市规划专门化方向并招收研究生。1981 年首批获得博士授予权，1988 年首批获得国家重点二级学科；同年清华大学建筑学院成立，下设城市规划系至今。2011年城乡规划专业成为一级学科，同年清华大学设立城乡规划专业本科。2012 年在教育部学科评估中清华大学城乡规划名列全国第一。

城市规划系主要承担城乡规划一级学科的教学和科研工作，重视以服务国家发展为办学目标，紧密围绕世界城乡建设的重大关键课题，依托清华多学科门类相融贯的丰厚教学资源与学科交叉基础，贯彻科学与艺术、理工与人文相结合的教学理念，重视建筑与城市设计、规划理论与实践的综合培养，形成以人居环境科学为指导的整体学科框架。
截止2015年底，城市规划系共有在职教师33人，相关机构包括8个所/中心/实验室（清华大学建筑与城市研究所、清华大学人居环境研究中心、首都区域空间规划研究北京市重点实验室、住宅与社区研究所、生态规划与绿色建筑教育部重点实验室、空间信息技术国家文物局重点科研基地、城市规划建设与管理北京市高校重点学科群建设工作站、清华大学人居信息实验室），1个工程实践平台（清控人居建设集团）和3个学术期刊编辑部（《China City Planning Review》编辑部、《城市与区域规划研究》编辑部、《生态城市与绿色建筑》编辑部）。

Urban and Rural planning education in Tsinghua University began in 1947 when Mr. Liang Sicheng taught the course "Urban Planning". In the spring of 1951, the urban Design Teaching and Research Group was established under the leadership of Mr. Wu Liangyong. In 1952, the urban planning Teaching and research Group was formally established. In 1981, it was one of the first batch of doctoral programs, and in 1988, it was one of the first batch of national Key second-level disciplines. In the same year, the School of Architecture of Tsinghua University was founded with the Department of Urban Planning. In 2011, urban and Rural Planning became a first-class discipline, and in the same year, Tsinghua University established the undergraduate program of urban and Rural Planning. In 2012, Tsinghua University ranked first in urban and rural planning in China in the discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education.

By the end of 2015, the Department of Urban Planning had 33 in-service teachers. Related institutions including eight/center/lab (tsinghua university institute of architecture and urban, residential environment research center, tsinghua university, the capital regional spatial planning research institute of Beijing municipal key laboratory, residential and community, ecological planning and green building key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, key research base of space information technology, state administration of cultural heritage, urban planning, construction and management of Beijing Construction workstation of Key Subject group, Habitat Information Laboratory of Tsinghua University), 1 engineering practice platform (Qingkong Habitat Construction Group) and 3 editorial departments of academic journals (Editorial department of China City Planning Review, Urban and Regional Planning Research, ecological City and Green Building).
