The Sobolev Institute of Mathematics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences is located in Akademgorodok, Novosibirsk, and has a roster of about 400 researchers. The Institute was founded in 1957 by Academician Sergey Sobolev and is headed by Sergey Goncharov, Professor, PhD (Physics and Mathematics), corresponding member of RAS. Relational methods of data mining and knowledge discovery, symbolic methods of numerical data mining, visual discovery in multivariate binary data

The research conducted by the Institute is supported by various national and interactive funds. In 2004, the Institute received 54 grants from the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, 8 grants from the Russian Humanitarian Science Foundation, 4 grants from the Federal pilot program "Integration", etc. Grants were allocated to seven science schools headed by A. A. Borovkov, Yu, within the framework of the National Programme for supporting Leading Science Schools. L. Ershov, M. M. Lavrent'ev, Yu.G. Reshetnyak, S. S. Goncharov, V. L. Beresnev and V. A. Vasil'ev. Twenty members of the Institute were awarded national Distinguished Scientist Fellowships and nine men were awarded National Young Scientist Fellowships.
In cooperation with the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of Novosibirsk State University, the Institute actively participates in the training of high-quality scientific talents.
