中央航空发动机研究院始建于1930年12月3日,是在中央空气流体动力学研究院螺旋桨发动机部、汽车和汽车发动机研究院的航空发动机部、伏龙芝航空工厂附属设计局基础上联合组建的,是俄罗斯航空发动机领域最权威的综合性、系统性研究机构。该研究院是俄罗斯联邦国家科学中心、联邦国家企业,是俄罗斯唯一拥有从航空发动机的研制到对产品的科技维护的全方面能力的企业。
CIAM作为俄罗斯领先的发动机研究机构,为无人机、小型飞机、亚音速客机和伙计、高超声速飞机、直升机以及其它各类型飞机设计发动机。CIAM拥有航空发动机开发的全生命周期技术,参与了俄罗斯所有的国产发动机的设计。CIAM的竞争实力在于拥有先进的数字化设计技术和航空发动机及其部件的设计及测试技术。
1953年创建起,CIAM多年来一直拥有欧洲最大的航空发动机试验体系。CIAM在航空发动机设计方面的主要任务包括:对未来各大类飞行器引擎发展进行全面预测、新型现代化发动机设计、发动机工作流程数学建模、发动机CAD数学建模、小型发动机设计、航空活塞发动机设计、高速发动机设计、发展和更新民用航空发动机的规范等。
