The Lebedev Institute of Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest and oldest research center in Russia. As a modern multi-physics institute, FIAN was founded in 1934 by academician S.I. Vavilov, a distinguished physicist, opticist and scientific organizer. The broad scope of research, covering almost all areas of physics, leads to the current structure of FIAN, which includes six scientific departments, which are equivalent in major directions to the research institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
As of July 2020, the staff of the Institute includes 1,279 people, including 800 researchers, 24 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 243 doctorates of science and 491 scientific candidates. The institute has branches at the Radio Observatories in Troitsk, Samara, Plotvino, Almaty, Pusicino and the Kalyazin Laboratory in Dolgprudny.
Among the science departments at FIAN, which are primarily explicitly subject-oriented, the department of Theoretical Physics stands out, with staff working in almost all areas of physics. In department senior personage, Nobel laureate V.L. gold at work, predict the thermoelectric phenomena exists in the superconductor, developed ferroelectricity of phenomenological theory, created the phenomenological theory of superconducting and superfluid helium, developed the theory of radio wave propagation in plasma - this is not a person get a complete list of results.
Every year, FIAN researchers publish about 20 monographs, about 1,500 articles in Russian and foreign journals and reports presented at conferences.
