Originally founded as the Max Planck Institute for Collective Products, the Max Planck Institute, which is responsible for the study of the provision of collective goods, has grown into an international centre focused on applied economics and behavioral law. In addition, the institute has chaired three independent research groups on "moral courage," "economic cognition," and "mechanisms for normative change." Researchers from a variety of disciplines, including economics, law, psychology and sociology, constitute a truly interdisciplinary environment that fosters the cross-fertilization of ideas. The Institute's research expertise covers a wide range of topics, including the formation of economic preferences, team decision-making, the analysis of trusted commodity markets, the definition of normative issues that require legal intervention, the effects of legal intervention, the formulation and application of rules, the mental processes of bystander intervention that violate norms, the cognitive and emotional processes that lead to choice, and reasoning about social norms.
