The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) was founded in 1834 to "advance architecture in general and promote access to the various arts and sciences associated with it". The Society receives no government funding and relies on its 40,000 members, sponsors and our charitable trading business to work. In the 1960s, RIBA developed into a regional organization.
RIBA has always led and supported the highest professional and ethical standards, attracted and nurtured the best and most diverse talents, provided access to education, knowledge and skills, helped members meet the challenges and opportunities of a changing world, built a body of knowledge, and promoted collaboration, research and innovation in practice as its vision and goals. The Society has a diverse, passionate and talented workforce dedicated to providing high professional standards. The core of the values we learn, about ourselves, and what we need to do is the foundation on which we build our future and are critical to achieving our vision goals.
RIBA has 12 regional societies in England and Wales, in association with the Royal Institute of Scottish Architects (RIAS), the Royal Institute of Architects Ulster (RSUA) and the Institute of Architects of Wales (SAW). There are 70 branches under the regional society, and there are 70 in the country. The supreme decision-making body is the National Council, which consists of 60 people, elected nationally or locally, and has 2 student representatives. The term of office of the Council shall be 3 years, and the consecutive term shall not exceed 2 consecutive terms.
