Founded in 1992 by the merger of three important ecological research institutes of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, it mainly conducts research on individual organisms, populations, ecological communities and ecosystems, with a diverse community of ecologists, multidisciplinary cross-collaboration to explore the complexity of ecosystems and provide solutions to complex ecological problems. The mission is to carry out pioneering basic and strategic ecological research in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and to make their ecological knowledge available to science and society.
