Glass and wood are combined to create a residential façade with an aperture effect

The façade openings of residential buildings designed by Arno Matis Architecture in Vancouver, Canada, are carefully conceived to open and close like an aperture, responding to different angles of solar radiation on each façade, providing passive shading. The opening on the south façade is deeper than the north façade, creating a better shading effect than the north façade; The shallower opening of the north façade allows for additional light.

Each opening is made of natural wood and glass, with mahogany panels encapsulated between two layers of glass. Encapsulated UV glass protects wood from the weather, while also preserving it in its natural form without the need for wood maintenance and dyeing treatment, further enhancing the richness of the natural wood grain by refracting light.

The novel combination is the first time in its kind that this material has been used as a building skin. The insulation panels also reduce solar radiation and enhance the thermal insulation of the façade. Cantilevered terraces and strong horizontal lines create a sense of lightness while weakening the building's sense of volume.

Located on a busy urban thoroughfare, the building has gradually shrunk from a 6-storey, high-school to two-storey villa, while its northern part is a single-family residential area, coinciding with the definition of a city block as "a single family transition to an urban community."

There are six buildings in total, and the water garden and bamboo courtyard divide it into two parts, which look vibrant under the sun. Low-rise residences are well-lit and bright and open.

Landscaped courtyards, central fountains and seating, and two 6,000-square-foot shared roof terraces create interstitial social spaces. The roof terrace includes an urban farming area, a children's playground and a bbq area where everyone can enjoy Vancouver's stunning mountain views.

      2022-07-01
